Experience Workshop STEAM learning course for teachers at Gradia

COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING THROUGH MULTIDISCIPLINARY & PHENOMENON-BASED LEARNING

How does multidisciplinary and phenomenon-based learning contribute to group building and community cohesion?

We’ve presented some of the roads one can walk as a teacher of immigrants of diverse backgrounds. The participants of the training teach at Gradia Jyväskylä, an education consortium bringing together vocational and upper secondary school education institutions. They mainly prepare immigrants for further education in Finland.

This occasion and similar trainings are part of the Sillat project, a cooperation between Jyvälän Setlementti ry and Experience Workshop ay.

The program we followed on September 17 was:

STEAM-ing Up Learning: Motivation by Innovation in Action Dr. Kristóf Fenyvesi & Nóra Somlyódy (30min)

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) integration in learning is becoming increasingly important worldwide. STEAM in today’s European schools represents a dynamically developing, but largely unexplored field. The development of collaborative and inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary problem-solving capabilities, which enable students to discover unexpected connections between different aspects of various complex phenomena, is not only an effective tool, but one of the most important goals of today’s learning societies.

ACTIVITY 1: WE ARE MORE TOGETHER! COLLABORATIVE FRACTAL (45 mins)

We need everyone’s contribution to get the 4D Frame Sierpinski Triangle done! Let’s see how far we can get together in space and how creativity can transform the result.

ACTIVITY 2: BODIES IN ACTION – MATHS IN MOTION (45 mins)

In this activity, we give you a snapshot on how body movement and dance can be implemented to learn abstract topics even in mathematics. Our workshop is based on the main results of the “Maths in Motion” (MiM) Erasmus+ educational project (2017-2019), which was led by Experience Workshop in Finland.

ACTIVITY 3: GIANTILES (45 mins)

Experience Workshop’s tiling activities integrating mathematics, art, culture, and real life. Our repertoire includes a growing collection of associated educational tools as well as experience- oriented pedagogical methods for teaching tessellations in a transdisciplinary STEAM framework. Our tools are designed to support the development of patterning abilities, the experiential understanding of symmetry and related transformations, and their transposition into problem-solving in mathematics, in arts and design, in real-life situations, and in intercultural topics.

Other methods and tools in multidisciplinary teaching and learning

Introduction of further opportunities with Experience Workshop’s multidisciplinary toolkits such as Poly-Universe, 4D Frame, Itsphun, LUX, CaraWonga, Pentiles (30min)

The training is part of the Sillat (Bridges) project, a collaboration between Experience Workshop and Jyvälän Settlements. It is funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus).
